Wimberley WSC has a key role in maintaining and improving the  quality of life for the Citizens of Wimberley. Employees in this class maintain primary responsibility for maintenance and installation tasks for Wimberley WSC’s water distribution system.

Under direct supervision of the Lead Operator:

  • performs maintenance and installation tasks for Wimberley WSC water distribution system.
  • Operates equipment for installation and construction of water mains.
  • Locates problems and performs repairs for leaks, line breaks, faulty components and restores interrupted services.
  • Performs some tasks independently, but generally functions as a part of a work crew for Wimberley WSC’s projects of greater complexity and dimension.
  • Performs related work as directed.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs various repairs of distribution system of Wimberley WSC.
  • Operates various types of vehicles and equipment in the repair and installation of water lines.
  • Performs water connections and disconnections as directed.
  • Performs various preventive maintenance duties, i.e., flushing water lines, cleaning and maintaining vehicles, maintaining portable pumps and power equipment.
  • Installs new water, meters, taps, new mains, valves, fire hydrants, and changes out existing meters as needed.
  • Follows proper safety protocols as required per work site.
  • Functions on call responding to emergencies and rotates weekly shifts as a relief technician.
  • Attends periodic safety meetings according to department policy.

Other Duties:

  • Performs routine facility/plant maintenance duties.
  • Provides assistance in various other utility functions as needed and assists other departments as directed.
  • Performs related work as directed.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certification in water treatment, or related fields is preferred.
  • One (1) year of previous experience in the field to include the safe and effective operation of a variety of light to medium duty equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver License, with an acceptable driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to obtain Water Operator License

Special Requirement:

  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential. Normal work schedule is Monday – Friday , 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Must be able to work holidays, weekends, after hours or during emergency situations as required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with supervisor, fellow personnel, other departments with whom position interacts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of safety precautions, and occupational hazards associated with the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the practices and materials utilized for water distribution repair, construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in safe and effective operation of light and medium duty equipment used in the construction, maintenance, repair and installation of water/distribution systems.
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand-held manual, gas or electrically powered tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Ability to issue and receive oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, complete and transmit repair orders, work orders, etc.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with supervisor, fellow personnel, other departments with whom position interacts.

 

 

Physical Demands, Working Environment and Sensory Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry moderate weight (up to 20 pounds) and to pull, push, or drag moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or more) of materials and supplies.
  • Some tasks involve frequent walking and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Some tasks involve regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to use their eyes, ears, hands, and fingers to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Some tasks involve frequent operation of vehicles, office, shop or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.
  • Some tasks involve frequent use of coordination and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand and power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions and contours.
  • Requires the ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, and inclement weather (e.g., dirt, dust, pollen, rain, ice, sleet). Some tasks may require exposure to strong odors, smoke and / or toxic chemicals.
  • Some tasks may risk exposure to elements that can cause illness (pathogens, virus, parasites).
  • Some tasks may require color, sound, depth and or visual perception and discrimination.
  • Some tasks may require oral communications ability.
